Solution 12256: Converting from Rectangular to Polar Coordinates Using the TI-30X IIS/B and TI-30XS MultiView™.
How do I convert rectangular coordinates to polar coordinates using the TI-30X IIS/B and TI-30XS MultiView?
If using the TI-30X IIS/B, to convert rectangular coordinates to polar coordinates, please follow the example listed below:
Convert the rectangular coordinate (4,3) to polar form (r, q).
To find r or magnitude:
• Press [DRG]
• Using the left and right arrow keys, underline DEG (for Degree mode)
• Press [ENTER]
• Press [2nd] [° ' "](key directly above the [DATA] key) to select R↔P.
• Using the left and right arrow keys, underline R►Pr
• Press [ENTER] to paste R►Pr( on the screen.
• Input the x-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 4.
• Press [2nd] [)] (closed parenthesis) to insert a comma.
• Input the y-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 3.
• Press [)] [ENTER] to display the results.
The screen will show 5 which is the value of r or the magnitude.
To find the angle q:
• Press [2nd] [° ' "](key directly above the [DATA] key) to select R↔P.
• Using the left and right arrow keys, underline R►Pq
• Press [ENTER] to paste R►Pq( on the screen.
• Input the x-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 4.
• Press [2nd] [)] (closed parenthesis) to insert a comma.
• Input the y-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 3.
• Press [)] [ENTER] to display the results.
The screen will show 36.86989765 which is the value of q or the angle.
If using the TI-30XS MultiView, to convert rectangular coordinates to polar coordinates, please follow the example listed below:
Convert the rectangular coordinate (4,3) to polar form (r, q).
To find r or magnitude:
• Press [mode] [enter] [2nd] [mode] (for Degree mode).
• Press [2nd] [prb] (to access the angle menu) and scroll over to highlight R◄►P.
• Press [1] to paste R►Pr( on the screen.
• Input the x-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 4.
• Press [2nd] [.] (decimal point) to insert a comma.
• Input the y-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 3.
• Press [)] [enter] to display the results.
The screen will show 5 which is the value of r or the magnitude.
To find the angle q:
• Press [mode] [enter] [2nd] [mode] (for Degree mode).
• Press [2nd] [prb] (to access the angle menu) and scroll over to highlight R◄►P.
• Press [2] to paste R►Pq( on the screen.
• Input the x-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 4.
• Press [2nd] [.] (decimal point) to insert a comma.
• Input the y-value of the rectangular coordinate, which is 3.
• Press [)] [enter] to display the results.
The screen will show 36.86989765 which is the value of q or the angle.
